Revista MUJER
Art Direction & Editorial Design
Role: Art Director (Freelance)
Client: Revista MUJER, a quarterly lifestyle magazine
Location: Austin, Texas
Years: 2014 – 2017
Overview
Revista MUJER is a Spanish-language lifestyle magazine celebrating Latinx women through culture, beauty, health, and home living. In 2014, I was approached by a long-time friend with an interesting project to design a new magazine—an exciting chance to step outside my corporate design work and create something fresh. From the ground up, I shaped its visual identity and editorial structure to engage a diverse readership across South and Central Texas.
Challenge & Goals
The goal was to craft a sophisticated, culturally resonant magazine that spoke directly to Latinx women. As the sole designer and art director, I was responsible for defining its visual language—ensuring it was both elegant and accessible while maintaining a distinct editorial presence.
Approach & Process
To establish Revista MUJER’s aesthetic, I conducted extensive research on magazine structures, typography, and layouts. I aimed for a modern, refined editorial design that blended bold imagery with fluid readability. My process included:
- Developing five core sections: Belleza (Beauty), Vida + Salud (Life + Health), Casa + Jardín (Home + Garden), En La Mesa (Food & Dining), and Perfil (Profiles).
- Creating flexible design templates that ensured consistency while allowing for editorial variety.
- Selecting typography and color palettes that reflected the vibrancy of Latinx culture while maintaining a sophisticated, high-end feel.
- Overseeing every design detail, from layout execution to final print production.
The first issue launched in Fall 2014, and over the next three years, I art-directed nine issues, shaping the magazine’s visual identity with each edition.
Outcome & Impact
- Award Recognition: Revista MUJER won multiple awards at the JOSÉ MARTÍ 2016 AWARDS for the NAHP (National Association of Hispanic Publications), including:
- Gold Award Outstanding Design Magazine
- Gold Award Best Hispanic Magazine
- Gold Award Outstanding New Publication
- Bronze Award Outstanding Travel Section
- Community Impact: The magazine became a platform for Latinx women, elevating their stories and perspectives while celebrating culture through editorial design.
Reflection
Art directing Revista MUJER remains one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Being able to create a publication that gave back to my community and represented my cultural roots was incredibly meaningful. This project reinforced my passion for editorial design and storytelling—combining aesthetics with purpose to create a lasting impact.
